Algarve Railway System
The Algarve region in the southernmost part of mainland Portugal is among the most popular tourist spots in the country. When you are planning to go to Portugal's capital city, Lisbon, there is a rail system that moves trains to-and-fro Faro municipality. It may take you three to four hours for the entire trip between Lisbon and Faro. Trains in the Algarve are notorious for being slow and not air-conditioned.
Additionally, trains will make stops on two other municipalities in the Algarve area: Loule and Albufeira. Connecting trains are also available to-and-from other stations in Algarve such as the Silves, Alcantarilha and Ferragudo stations. Furthermore, you should note that the train stations are often located a distance away from towns. Thus, you also need to ride a bus or taxi to get into the towns.
To buy your tickets, there are ticket machines in some major stations. For smaller ones, you will have to buy ticket on the train. Moreover, take note that Faro airport is almost four miles away from the Faro train station. Thus, you may also have to ride a bus or taxi in between.
